The Golden Chopsticks Awards (GCAs) is an awards ceremony which recognises Oriental cuisine across the UK. Our mission is to celebrate the enormous contribution of Oriental cuisine to the UK catering industry and champion those who work within it.
Let’s start with a little history…
The GCAs was founded in 2017 by three friends; Gok Wan, TV presenter, fashion stylist and author. Lucy Mitchell, Managing Director of Oriental Food Specialist SeeWoo UK and Sarah Lewis, leading food and drink PR and communications specialist. The Founders, with their common interest in Oriental cuisines and culture, were astonished that there was no awards ceremony at the time dedicated to South East Asian (Oriental) cuisine and decided now was the time to launch one.
After months of research and hard work, a concept for The Golden Chopsticks Awards was born. From here the team were able to secure the support of ten expert judges led by head judge Ken Hom OBE, who would bring invaluable knowledge, authenticity and credibility to the decision making process of the awards. As the project built momentum, key industry sponsors came on board including Just Eat and Lee Kum Kee amongst other influential brands. This brought a further wealth of experience and expertise to the table.
The GCAs campaign launched in January 2018 across the UK, followed by six weeks of public voting where people could vote for their favourite restaurant or takeaway across nine award categories. The public voted in their thousands, which was incredible considering this was the first GCAs. Once voting closed, the top three finalists in each category would go to the judging panel to decide the overall winner. There were also six special Judges Awards voted for purely by our expert panel.
On Thursday 16thApril 2018, Gok Wan hosted The Golden Chopsticks Awards at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square. The Awards were attended by the category finalists as well as the biggest names, influencers and chefs in the Oriental food industry. Check out the 2018 winners and award night photos.
After a very successful start, the GCAs return in 2019, and all the 13 public categories are open to any Oriental restaurant or takeaway in the UK. Voting opens on 1st February until 10th March and the awards ceremony will take place at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square on Monday 29th April 2019.
